There are some rare times when a tooth is so badly traumatized by an untreated cavity or dental fracture that a dentist simply cannot save the tooth, even with endodontic therapy. This usually requires Dr. Kevin Scott to extract whatever remains of the tooth from the underlying socket to help ease the pain and prevent a new infection from developing in your gums.

The void created by the extracted tooth can also do more than hamper your ability to chew food or change your smile’s appearance. As time goes by the loss of structure in the area can cause the neighboring teeth to drift out of their correct position and alignment.

To fully restore the function of your mouth and prevent these complications, Dr. Kevin Scott might recommend replacing the missing tooth with a dental bridge. The process typically requires two separate appointments to complete the dental restoration.

Dr. Kevin Scott will start by examining the two teeth neighboring the void to ensure they are completely healthy. Dr. Kevin Scott will then remove the tooth enamel from each of these teeth. This leaves behind a pair of dentin abutments that will later serve as anchor points for your dental bridge.

A detailed impression will then be cast of the void, the two abutments, and the related teeth in your dentition. It will be sent to a dental lab to guide their technicians in creating your dental bridge. Once this is done a temporary crown will be secured over each abutment to protect it.

When your permanent bridge is ready, Dr. Kevin Scott will call you back in for a brief follow up appointment to cement it into place. Once this is done your new bridge will restore the missing tooth for many years to come.
