If you’re a wrestler, then you need to remember to care for your smile as you practice and compete. This is important because, whether you believe it or not, wrestling can be damaging to the smile. So, it’s important to care for it in every way you can. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Kevin Scott, has some tips for you.
First, wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard can protect your teeth and gums when you suffer a blow to the face, no matter if it’s a hard or soft blow. We all know getting hit in the mouth is common while wrestling. Wearing a mouthguard can help you avoid oral injury, like chipped, broken, and knocked-out teeth as well as damaged or injured oral tissues.
Second, avoid drinking sports drinks. Sports drinks can encourage tooth decay development because they are loaded with sugar. As you probably already know, sugar is bad for the teeth. So, it’s best to drink water instead. You can also reduce (not eliminate) the effects of the sports drink by rinsing with water after consuming the beverage.
